FARRAH RASHEED
reflection On Steel Field Landfill Visit
February 27, 2014 journal entry
The Steel Field Landfill was a lot of fun. One thing I learned was that people can bring their own trash there. I thought it was going to be super smelly at the landfill. To my surprise, it was not. In fact, it smelled normal! The reason the landfill did not smell bad was because it was all ashes and it was covered with dirt. Only nonburnable things like couches don't go there. One thing that greatly amazed me was that the trash mountain was about 150 feet tall! Because of the rubbish being burnt and made into ashes, 90 percent of trash is reduced. How cool is that? There are 50 acres of trash and dirt in the site since 1986. Many birds such as seagulls and eagles come to pick at the garbage. Another thing I thought was cool is that they recycle car tires into electricity. My favorite thing I learned was when they told me that they put thick plastic on a hill to stop it from slipping. I loved the trip to the landfill. I think all 5th graders should visit the landfill for a field trip.

bay county waist to energy facility journal entry # 2 march 6, 2014
There were many cool things that I learned at the incinerator. One of the things I learned was that it takes 1500 degrees in the fire to burn the trash. Now that is hot! All the burning makes a lot of deadly gasses. The most poisonous gas is dioxin. It gives cancer! That's not so bad any more because they filter all the gas before they let it go. they filter it with lime filters. Anything the lime filters didn't get, bags will capture it. Finally, they let the clean air go into a windmill that goes 6000 rotations per a minute. All the energy that is made from the windmill could be in your house right now! Just because it smells and looks dirty, it doesn't mean its not fun!

TERRA-CYCLE
Collecting trash for Terra-cycle was a lot of fun . It was also good for the environment Terra-cycle is an organization for turning trash into cool and new things . For example we turned trash into a chandelier. Terra-cycle is an organisation for turning trash into cool and new things. For example, we turned plastic bottles into a chandelier because there was a big pile of plastic bottles lying around. We sent trash to Terra-cycle so that the organisation so will turn the trash into a new thing. Collecting trash for Terra-cycle was very enjoyable and I hope to do it next year!
When we went to the the Science And Discovery center, the experts told us how harmful the cigar butts are. They even told us a story that if you take a single cigarette butt and put it in a goldfish bowl and half of the goldfish died.
how recycling effects wildlife
Recycling helps wildlife because when you recycle trash doesn't go into the animal's homes and they don't eat the trash, so the animals don't die. Trash also pollutes their water. Litter on the ground becomes litter in animal homes.
Planting trees is good for the environment, if you throw litter on the ground, we will have a hard time finding food to eat because all the animals will die. If we want to help ourselves, we have to help animals first.
