RAYMOND STEINBRECHER
Journal Reflection: February 27, 2014
On my field study I went to Steelfield Landfill. I thought the landfill would be a stinky place that smells like trash, but it didn't! I learned that they received 150-200 truckloads of trash per day. Another thing I learned was that the landfill receives about $9,000,047.50 per ton of trash. I think that is a really cool. The thing I found most interesting though, was that there was a hill 140 ft. above sea level made of trash. It was so tall that when we drove over the bridge going back to school we could see it. While I was at the landfill I could hear many birds cawing and I could see tractors plowing the hill over with dirt. I think our field study was very fun and I cannot wait to go there again.
Questions and Answers for the Landfill:
who gives you the trash?
Different Counties such as bay and washington county.
How high above sea level is the trash mountain?
the trash mountain is about 140 above sea level.
Do you have a certain type of trash that bugs you?
aluminum is one kind of trash that mr. bart really gets annoyed by.
bay county: waste to energy facility
Journal entry #2: March 6, 2013
On our field study I went to the Bay County Waste To Energy Facility. I learned that they generate 13 mega watts an hour, and use 2 mega watts an hour. I also learned that it takes 5 workers to operate the whole facility! That is pretty amazing. I thought it was very interesting to see mountains of garbage just sitting there waiting to be incinerated and reduced to ashes. Some of my classmates didn't like how it smelled, but I didn't mind it at all. Overall, I think the field study was very fun and I learned lots of things.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR THE incinerator:
where do you take the trash after it is burnt?
we bring it to the landfill to be dumped.
Do you turn the burnt trash into some sort of energy?
yes we use trash to generate energy.
If so how do you make the energy?
we use the trash to turn a turbine to create energy.
how many parts are there to the facility?
there are 3 parts to the facility.
Letter to mr. bart
Dear Mr. Bart,
Your facility was amazing. I learned that you can generate electricity using a turbine! I also learned that it only takes 5 people to operate and run the whole facility! Thank you and Mr. Bryan for answering all of our questions. You were very patient and willing to wait, no matter how many questions there were. You had to do work but instead, you gave us a tour around the facility. That was really nice. I can't wait to go to your facility again!
Sincerely,
Raymond

Terracycle
TerraCycle is a business that reuses materials to create new things such as curtains made of Sprite bottles. My class and I have begun to help TerraCycle by encouraging our school to put candy wrappers in boxes we have placed around the school, so we can give the wrappers to TerraCycle. We are required to collect 9 pounds of candy wrappers before we send our big box of candy wrappers to TerraCycle. Every Friday our class goes around to every room to gather the candy wrappers they have collected. My class and I have learned a lot from being a part of this project.
Poem about expedition:
Littering is bad,
It makes me very sad,
And I wish people would never do it,
People don't care,
About us nor the air,
And we have very little time to renew it.
It makes me very sad,
And I wish people would never do it,
People don't care,
About us nor the air,
And we have very little time to renew it.
Technology & its affect on the environment
May 23, 2014
Technology affects the environment because it is made of materials such as silicon, neon, iron etc. used in the making of these digital devices and machines.
Technology can be very harmful to the environment. For example, if you are driving a car and you are revving your engine, it will release gases through the muffler. The gases will effect things such as trees, the ecosystem and the atmosphere. The gases can go into the ozone layer which protects the earth from the suns ultraviolet rays.
