Journal Entry #1 2 - 27 - 14 SteelField Landfill
I thought the Steelfield landfill would have a disturbing odor and be filled with trash. YUCK! Guess what, it isn't! The Steelfield Landfill is an amazing and dumbfounding place. The landfill's peak is 140 feet above sea level and about 90 feet high off the ground. This landfill is one of the cleanest landfills in Florida. This landfill opened in 1986 and sells 1 ton of trash (scrap) for $4,750! Every day the landfill gets 400 tons at least! Also, there are thousands of landfills in the USA.
Fun Facts:
Did you know mulch stabilizes the landfill so wind and rain doesn't affect it?
Did you know at the landfill they burn tires for heat energy?
You can see Panama City Beach from the top of the landfill since it is 140 feet above sea level!
Questions to landfill owners & workers:
1. What is the weight of the landfill? (About)
2. What is the heaviest portion of trash brought in from one truck?
3. Is the landfill mostly dirt or ash?
3. Answer the landfill is mostly made of ash.
4. How did your incinerator break down?
5. Aren't landfills very bad for the environment?
5. Answer yes they are.

3/5/14 journal entry #2
At first I thought the plant would have a big incinerator and no smell. Guess what? I was wrong. The incinerator I examined wasn't so big! Also it smelled very very bad! Their turbine generates 13 megawatts per hour! Can you believe the incinerator costs 60 to 70 million $! I loved how the incinerator worked. Mr. Bart and Mr. Brian showed us the computer room. It could completely control the incinerator. The waste to energy plant was awesome!
Fun Facts:
1. The turbine spins at 5500 rpm!
2. If you mix lime and water it becomes very hot!
3. Each day the plant can power 3 to 4 thousand houses for one day!
4. The plant has cannons to shoot water out to put out fires!
5. The most dangerous gas there is dioxin, it causes cancer!
6. Incineration lowers the amount of methane!
WOW!
Dear Mr. Bart,
Thank you for letting us visit the waste to energy plant. I didn't know that the turbines that generate electricity spin 5000 to 6000 times a minute! You showed us so many things. I like how you and Mr. Brian showed us how the incinerator and how it works.
Sincerely,
Levi
QUESTIONS
1. About how many tons of trash comes in every day?
A. About 400 tons
2. Is the incinerator semi-automatic?
A. Yes it is
3. How hot does the incinerator get?
A. 1500 degrees Fahrenheit
Here is a video similar to what they do at the Waste To Energy plant at Florida. But it is a little more intricate. This one is from Onondaga County.

Recycling paper
We've been wasting so much paper at our school and our expedition is on recycling. So our class decided to start recycling paper. First, we had to encourage our school to recycle because we were wasting so much paper! This year 6 classes are recycling. Thousands of papers are being recycling at our school and we hope to make a difference by recycling!
By recycling paper we save trees, materials, and waste from landfills!
Here is a video about how recycling works at this recycling factory
